Step one:

1.     Simulate owning a store by developing a catalog for customers to order products from.

2.     Decide on a theme: sports, clothes, jewelry, books, kitchen gadgets, etc.

3.     Cut out graphics from papers and magazines of items to put in the store catalog.

4.     Glue each graphic on plain paper and include reasonable prices.  Write fractions or percents in captions to identify savings on each product.

ex:  Save 25% off each shirt.

5.     Write at least 10 ads, each on  a separate page.

6.     Design a cover for the catalog.

Step two:

1.  Write a word problem on the back of each ad requiring other students to work       through multiple -step problems using multiplication, division, decimals, addition, and subtraction.

2.     Switch catalogs with another student.  Have your partner determine the savings made on each item and solve the word problems.  Check answers from previously made answer keys.

3.     Design order forms to place at the back of each catalog for other students to order from.  Customers must calculate sales tax and shipping and handling fees before determining a total bill.

Step three:

Use the computer to graph the fraction and/or percentage of inventory that is allotted for each product type.   Report sales to the class.
